Bolivar High School, SBU join forces for jazz concert Nov. 14

BOLIVAR, Mo. 鈥 The Bolivar High School Jazz Band will join the 麻豆影院 Jazz Ensemble in concert at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 14, in Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar campus.

Under the direction of Steve McClard and Dr. Jeffery L. Waters, dean of SBU鈥檚 College of Music, Arts and Letters, the 17-25-piece ensembles are dedicated to being the voice of American jazz in their respective campus communities.

The program, which is free and open to the public, will include the wide variety of styles associated with the contemporary jazz ensemble. The BHS portion will include Cannonball Adderley鈥檚 鈥淪ack of Woe鈥 and Red Garland鈥檚 鈥淏lues by Five,鈥 as well as big-band favorites 鈥淚 Found a New Baby鈥 and 鈥淎merican Patrol.鈥 The SBU program will feature Horace Silver鈥檚 鈥淥pus de Funk鈥 and Wes Montgomery鈥檚 鈥淲est Coast Blues鈥 along with the perennial favorites Dizzy Gillespie鈥檚 鈥淎 Night in Tunisia鈥 and the melancholy ballad 鈥淕od Bless the Child,鈥 made famous by jazz singer Billie Holliday.

鈥淛azz ensembles like to explore a mix of jazz styles and repertoire in a concert, and these two groups are no exception,鈥 Waters said. 鈥淪wing, Latin, ballads, funk 鈥 there鈥檚 a little something for everyone.鈥

SBU鈥檚 17-piece Jazz Ensemble is the premier ensemble on campus dedicated to the exclusive study of jazz music.
